The Sketchbook Chronicles
Using a sketchbook to depict life experiences, I often refer back to different times in my life as inspiration for a project I’m working on. Whether it be a time when I felt my lowest or angriest or even happiest. Often when I get stuck on a concept or an idea I go back and realize I’m already equipped with the knowledge and inspiration, I just have to remind myself that I already created the work.
My sketchbooks are the easiest way for me to express how I’m feeling or what I’m thinking, more than words. I use imagery to illustrate my inner thoughts. The pages are often filled with doodles and pen strokes. I think a pen and paper are my greatest tools, besides my imagination.
Sketching is how I form memories. I don’t always need to take pictures. I sketch from my memories of my childhood to adult life, sometimes fusing the past, present and future on the page. I collect a lot of paper materials to reference later. We have a couple boxes full of print matter from over the years in our studio.
